چکیده

We extend our previous analysis which used generalized luminosity functions (GLFs) to predict the number of quasars and galaxies in low-radio-frequency-selected samples as a function of redshift, radio luminosity, narrow-emission-line luminosity and type of unified scheme (Grimes, Rawlings & Willott 2004). Our extended analysis incorporates the observed submillimetre (850 μm) flux densities of radio sources, employs a new method which allows us to deal with non detections, and focuses on the highluminosity population. First, we conclude that the submillimetre luminosity L850 of low-frequency-selected radio sources is correlated with the bolometric luminosity LBol of their quasar nuclei via an approximate scaling relation L850 ∝ L 0.7±0.2 Bol . Second, we conclude that there is quantitative evidence for a receding-torus-like physical process for the high-luminosity population within a two-population unified scheme for radio sources; this evidence comes from the fact that radio quasars are brighter in both narrow emission lines and submillimetre luminosity than radio galaxies matched in radio luminosity and redshift. Third, we note that the combination of a receding-torus-like scheme and the assumption that the observed submillimetre emission is dominated by quasar-heated dust yields a scaling relation L850 ∝ L 0.5 Bol which is within the errors of that determined here for radio-selected quasars, and consistent with that inferred for radio-quiet quasars by Willott, Rawlings & Grimes (2003).

An ALMA survey of submillimetre galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South: radio properties and the far-infrared/radio correlation

We present a study of the radio properties of 870μm-selected submillimetre galaxies (SMGs), observed at high resolution with ALMA in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. From our initial sample of 76 ALMA SMGs, we detect 52 SMGs at > 3σ significance in VLA 1400 MHz imaging, of which 35 are also detected at > 3σ in new 610 MHz GMRT imaging. Within this sample of radio-detected SMGs, we measure...

A Submillimetre Selected Quasar in the Field of Abell 478 ⋆

We present the discovery of a dusty quasar, SMM J04135+10277, located behind the galaxy cluster Abell 478. The quasar was discovered as the brightest source in a submillimetre survey of high redshift galaxies lensed by foreground rich clusters of galaxies in a project aimed at studying the cosmic star formation history of dusty galaxies. With submillimetre fluxes of S 850 = 25 ± 2.8 mJy and S 4...

A submillimetre difference between radio galaxies and radio quasars: evidence for quasar-heated dust and synchronized submillimetre and radio source activity

We present submillimetre photometry of 11 3CR and 6CE radio quasars of similar 151-MHz radio luminosity and redshifts to the radio galaxies studied at 1.3 < z < 2 by Archibald et al. (2001). We detect all bar one quasar at 850 μm, and five quasars are confirmed as dusty hyperluminous objects by detections at shorter wavelengths. Our observations reveal a clear difference between the submillimet...

Dust temperature and the submillimetre–radio flux density ratio as a redshift indicator for distant galaxies

It is difficult to identify the distant galaxies selected in existing submillimetre-wave surveys, because their positions are known at best to only several arcseconds. Centimetrewave VLA observations are required in order to determine positions to subarcsecond accuracy, and so to allow reliable optical identifications to be made. Carilli & Yun pointed out that the ratio of the radio to submilli...

The ISOPHOT - MAMBO survey of 3CR radio sources: Further evidence for the unified schemes

We present the complete set of ISOPHOT observations of 3CR radio galaxies and quasars, which are contained in the ISO Data Archive, providing 75 midand far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) between 5 and 200μm. For 28 sources they are supplemented with MAMBO 1.2 mm observations and for 15 sources with new submillimetre data from the SCUBA archive. The sample includes flat and steep ...
